The variable speed is an excellent feature and the blades have no problem grinding hard fruits and veggies. I am a completely satisfied customer thanks to Breville for making a top quality product and also to Amazon for offering this product at the great price. The juicer is everything the description says and more. Its very easy to clean too. Ordering, shipping and receiving the product was a completely satisfying process.
My husband and I started juicing regularly (almost every day), since the arrival of our Breville Ikon 900 juicer over a month ago. The opening is wide but not wide enough for a good size apple. The important thing is, we are utilizing this appliance and getting healthier by doing so because of the ease of use. I like the stainless steel looks, and it seems sturdy enough.
The only thing that I spend time on cleaning is the screen. (Now I cut the beets into quarters--no problem). Taking it apart to clean is a snap.
I DO cut up my fruits and veggies, though, only because the first time I used it, it seemed to get kind of stuck with half a beet. A brush is provided, and it works great. I don't find the machine particularly noisy-- it's certainly not as noisy as my blender.
I cut carrots in half and apples into quarters. It's like drinking "liquid sunshine." What could be better than that.
I love the variable speed and will NEVER again purchase a juicer without this feature. Of all the juicers I researched, this has proven to be the best choice. It is so power, yet quieter than I expected. In fact, I love this juicer so much that I'm already looking at other Breville products. Great company.
When operating, it is simple to use, and is no louder than a blender despite the powerful motor. After careful research and deliberation, I decided to purchase the Breville Ikon Juice Extractor. I can corroborate the feedback of many of the previous reviews here on Amazon. It does a great job of extracting the juice, the pulp being dryer than I had expected. The cleanup is amazingly fast and easy (even the wire mesh basket). After 6 weeks of ownership, I can you that I couldn't be happier.
I used my $100 Jack LaLanne juicer for 5+ years and never had an issue. And there's much less splatter in both the juice cup and the pulp basket - two fairly decent pluses. Whole chucks of greens, beets, carrots, and everything else I juice come through no matter what speed I use and what order I juice the produce in.
After carefully reading tons of reviews I decided on this juicer - it was between this and the Breville Juice Fountain Plus - and I figured the extra $50 for the multiple speeds would be well worth it. I can say that my LaLanne definitely had a small amount of pieces in the pulp, but no where near as much as this Breville does - and the pulp in the LaLanne is definitely drier. But decided I wanted to upgrade to a "better" machine.
The pulp is also a little more wet than it should be. Well I am not so pleased. The multiple speeds are completely worthless.
The nice parts are the noise, it's considerably quitter. Still not sure it's worth $100 more than the LaLanne though.
